We’re a Jacksonville-based digital marketing agency, and the Jacksonville market is interesting because it’s big enough to be competitive but local enough that smart SEO still moves the needle fast. So I want to share what’s actually worked for us and our clients — not textbook theory, but what we’ve seen produce real results.

Start With the Right Keywords (Not Just the Obvious Ones)

Most businesses go after the most obvious keywords for their industry and then wonder why they can’t crack page one. The problem is those terms — “digital marketing agency,” “web design company” — are dominated by national brands with enormous domain authority and ad budgets to match.

Local keyword modifiers change the game entirely. “Digital marketing agency Jacksonville FL,” “Jacksonville web design,” “SEO company Jacksonville” — these are searches made by people who actually want to hire someone local. They have intent. And the competition, while still real, is beatable with consistent effort.

We also look for longer-tail variations that signal buying intent: “how much does a website cost in Jacksonville,” “best social media manager for small business Jacksonville,” “affordable ecommerce website design Florida.” These longer phrases get fewer searches, but the people typing them are much further down the buying funnel.

Your Google Business Profile Is Not Optional

If you have a local service business and you haven’t fully built out your Google Business Profile, stop reading this and go do that first. Seriously. For local searches, the map pack (those three businesses that show up at the top with the pins) gets a significant chunk of clicks before users even reach the organic results.

A complete profile means: accurate hours, real photos (not stock), a detailed description with your primary keywords woven in naturally, and — this is the big one — consistent reviews. Responding to every review, good or bad, signals to Google that you’re an active, legitimate business. We’ve seen clients jump into the map pack within 60 days just from cleaning up their profile and getting a handful of new reviews.

Content Still Wins, But It Has to Be Real

There’s a lot of garbage content on the internet right now. Everyone’s pumping out AI-written blog posts stuffed with keywords and zero actual insight, and honestly Google is getting better at filtering it out. What performs is content that’s genuinely helpful — the kind where someone reads it and thinks “okay, I learned something.”

For our clients, we focus on answering the questions their customers actually ask. A plumber we work with gets consistent traffic from a post about what to do when your water heater starts making noise. A wellness center we manage social for gets inquiries from a post explaining the difference between different IV therapy formulas. These aren’t glamorous topics, but they’re exactly what people are searching for at 11pm when they’re worried about something.

One post a month, written well, beats ten posts a month written to hit a quota.

On-Page Basics That People Still Mess Up

After doing hundreds of site audits, I’m still surprised how often we find the same fixable issues. Missing or duplicate title tags. H1 tags that say “Welcome to Our Website.” Images with no alt text. Contact pages with no address, making it hard for Google to confirm your local presence. Pages that load in 8 seconds on mobile.

None of these are complicated to fix — they just require someone to actually look. We do a technical audit as part of every new client engagement because cleaning up the foundation makes everything else you do more effective. You can build great content and earn solid backlinks, but if your site has crawl errors or a confusing structure, you’re leaving a lot of performance on the table.

Building Authority Takes Time, But It Compounds

Backlinks — other websites linking to yours — are still one of Google’s strongest ranking signals. But the way to earn them has changed. Buying links from sketchy directories is a fast way to get penalized. What actually works is being genuinely worth linking to.

We’ve helped clients get links through local press (Jacksonville Business Journal, local neighborhood blogs), partnerships with complementary businesses, sponsoring community events, and creating resources that other people in their industry find useful enough to reference. It’s slower, but the links you earn this way stick and they build real authority over time.
